Late last year, Chilean singer and songwriter Juga, premiered her latest music video live at the official broadcast studio of the Chess World Championships (viewed by an audience of over 1.5 billion people). Though chess might seem like an unlikely topic for the epic and operatic kind of music such as Juga is making – but it is exactly this perception of chess that she aims to challenge.
Juga’s work brings to life the drama, beauty and artistry of chess through music – the video, Isolated Pawn, named after the weakest piece on the chess board, explores the need for self-empowerment in the face of vulnerability. Speaking on the video, Juga said: “It is the triumph of Spirit over Matter, something that happens often in Chess. For me, that is what makes Chess so poetic and beautiful: the continuous contrast with its scientific and logical side.”
