“When I was working on my song ‘Black Is The True Light’ at home, my daughter who was 4 and her friends would pick up on the words and begin to sing back the words “black is the true light” and I realised the power of what I had in my hands and how it will be so beautiful to have kids singing this song and imprint them with these words. I’m hoping it will wash away layers of subconscious racism”
Though discovering her true artist identity in the USA, Estelle California‘s music has been influenced by all the places of her past. From a rough childhood of physical and mental abuse, to traveling through Africa, and finally finding her new home in California where she felt truly free, her music and words are truly inspired.
Her latest single, Black Is the True Light, is ‘a tribute to the African American and African communities around the world who have constantly battled against division and hatred’, as well as being inspired by her own triumphs against adversity.
The track comes from the forthcoming EP, My Name is Freedom, which features legendary producer and drummer Narada Michael Walden (Whitney Houston; Mariah Carey; Lionel Richie); ace guitarist Vernon “Ice” Black (Diana Ross, Anastacia; Babyface); James Henry and veteran vocalists Larry Batiste, Cornell Carter and Tony Lindsay.
